KIWANIS CLUB WILL HOLD BENEFIT RACE AT SAMOA DUNES

The Humboldt Bay Kiwanis Club will hold a fund-raising off-highway-vehicle event at the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which manages the recreation site, approved a permit for the "Sand Flea Grand Prix."  The non-profit Kiwanis Club will use money raised to continue community service programs.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., with the race slated to begin at 11.

For additional information on the event, contact Kiwanis Club organizer Stan Dame,

(707) 441-1320, or BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Bruce Cann at (707) 825-2322.

The BLM manages the 300-acre Samoa Dunes west of Eureka for a variety of recreation uses.  In addition to off highway vehicle recreation, people visit the dunes for surfing, bird watching, hiking, picnicking and beachcombing.  The area is also used for scientific study of rare plants.
