MAP OF GOLDFIELDS RECREATION AREAS AVAILABLE

The Folsom Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management and the Sacramento office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that a federal map of the Yuba Goldfields, east of Marysville in Yuba County, depicting areas open for public outdoor recreation is now available.

According to BLM Field Manager Deane Swickard, the recent court decisions that opened Hammonton Road to public use have also provided legal access to some of the federal lands within the Goldfields area.  "The road goes through one block of BLM-administered land in the Goldfields, but not the other," Swickard explained.  He went on to say that although public lands under the BLM's jurisdiction are normally managed for public use, not all have legal public access.  Private property owners have the right to forbid the use of their lands as a means of access to public lands.

The Corps of Engineers manages land in the Goldfields for the purpose of debris management on the Yuba River - a project related to early mining activities.  Corps administered lands in the Goldfields are not open for public recreation because of concerns for public safety.

The BLM and the Corps of Engineers are working on a long-range plan to consolidate federal lands in the Goldfields, and improve public outdoor recreation opportunities along the Yuba River.  No date has been set for the consolidation.

For a copy of the map that shows the public access area, or for more information, contact the BLM's Folsom Field Office at 63 Natoma Street, Folsom, CA 95630, or by calling (916) 985-4474.  The map and aerial view map are available in PDF format at:
