Wild horses and burros will be at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles this weekend, looking for homes through the BLM's adoption program. The animals will arrive shortly after lunch on Friday. You can get a look at what is available among the 80 mustangs and 20 burros, and get pre-registered to adopt beginning Saturday morning. The gates open at 8 a.m. Saturday. Competitive bidding will begin at 9 a.m. and lasts for one hour. After that, what is left will be available for the minimum bid price of $125. The adoption will continue through Sunday. All of the horses have been treated by vets, and come with a complete set of health records and a history of where they were rounded up on the open range. These animals are loyal and dependable when properly trained. A free training seminar will be offered at the fairgrounds by a professional horse trainer. To adopt, you must be 18 years of age and have the financial means to care for an animal. You must also have facilities that meet BLM specifications. A minimum corral space of 400 square feet is required for each animal with a six-foot fence made of pipe or wood. Adopters must supply transportation for their animals, but BLM wranglers will load them for you. It is BLM's responsibility to manage wild horses and burros and sustain the herds in the wild at a level that the range can support. The adoption program ensures good care for those rounded up and for those remaining on the range. Officially declared living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the west, these horses and burros are a national treasure and you can help them by providing a good home. Come see these national treasures this weekend at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles. - BLM - |
