BLM RESOURCE ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETS OCT. 17-18 IN SPARKS

Land use planning issues will highlight the agenda, when the Bureau of Land Management's Northeast California Resource Advisory Council (RAC) meets Thursday and Friday, Oct. 17 and 18, in the Conference Center of John Asquaga's Nugget in Sparks.

The meeting will include a joint session with the BLM Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council.

The Northeast California RAC will convene its business meeting Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.  Agenda items include reports from the BLM California State Management Team meeting, and status reports on development of a juniper management strategy, conservation planning for sage grouse, and development of new land use plans for BLM-managed public lands in northeast California and extreme northwest Nevada.  Time for public comments has been scheduled for 5 p.m.

On Oct. 18, the council convenes at 7:30 a.m. in joint session with the Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin RAC to discuss planning issues related to the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon-Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area.

The RACs will hear a report from a joint subcommittee that has been working closely with the BLM on development of a draft management plan and environmental impact statement for the National Conservation Area north of Gerlach, Nev.

The BLM councils provide advice to the Secretary of the Interior, through the BLM, on issues affecting management of public lands.  The Northeast California RAC works with managers in Susanville, Alturas and Cedarville, Calif., while the Sierra Front-Northwestern Great Basin RAC advises managers in Carson City and Winnemucca, Nev.

Both sessions are open to the public.  Additional information is available from BLM Public Affairs Officer Jeff Fontana, (530) 252-5332.
