EAGLE PASS ROAD TO BE CLEANED-UP BY LOCAL VOLUNTEERS ON

NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY

The Bureau of Land Management and the city of Needles will host a volunteer cleanup project along a six-mile segment of the East Mojave Heritage Trail on October 19, 2002, in honor of National Public Lands Day (NPLD).

Volunteers will have a unique opportunity to give something back to the country and the community by helping to restore this segment of the popular OHV trail. The six-mile segment starts on Eagle Pass Road and crosses city, county, state and federal lands.  There are also a few parcels of private land.  The debris has been there for several years and is scattered on both sides of the road.

"The cooperation we are receiving from the city of Needles and Don Brown of DDC Construction has made this project possible," says Molly Brady, field manager for the Needles BLM office.  "We are very excited about this collaborative effort and are inviting other agencies and businesses to participate, making this a true community project."

Although most National Public Lands Day projects will be held on September 28, 2002, the Needles project will be October 19, 2002 to avoid the warmer temperatures of September.

NPLD brings thousands of volunteers throughout American together to refurbish and restore the country's public places.  These are the lands and facilities Americans use for outdoor recreation, education, and just plain enjoyment.  They encompass national parks, monuments, wildlife refuges, deserts, forests, grasslands, marine sanctuaries, lakes and reservoirs managed by federal agencies, but belonging to, and enjoyed by everyone.  This year's NPLD theme is

"Explore American's Backyard."

Since its inception, NPLD has dramatically demonstrated Americans' concern for their public lands.  The first event was sponsored by three federal agencies and attracted 700 volunteers to three sties.  Last year, nine federal agencies and 85 state and local partners supported the efforts of 65,000 volunteers at 375 sites.
