Nominations are being sought for a local advisory committee on the Carrizo Plain National Monument. The committee will advise the Secretary of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management on resource management issues at the Monument which sits on the border between San Luis Obispo and Kern counties.

The nine member committee will be made up of the following:

• A member of, or nominated by, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors

• A member of, or nominated by, the Kern County Board of Supervisors

• A member of, or nominated by, the Carrizo Native American Advisory Council

• A member of, or nominated by, the Central California Resource Advisory Council

• A member representing individuals or companies authorized to graze livestock with the National Monument

• Four members with recognized backgrounds reflecting –

A) the purpose for which the Monument was established, and
B) the interests of other stakeholders including the general public, that are affected by or interested in the planning and management of the National Monument

Anyone may submit a nomination, which should include a completed nomination form, letters of recommendation from the interests which the nominee seeks to represent, and any other information that would support the qualifications of the nominee. Nominations must be submitted by May 24, 2002, to Ron Fellows, BLM Field Manager, 3801 Pegasus Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308.

Duties of the committee will include:

• Develop recommendations for the revision and implementation of the management plan
• Advise in establishing resource management priorities
• Advise in establishing landscape goals and objectives
• Develop recommendations for ecosystem approaches to management of the Monument
• Advise on efforts to develop collaborative approaches to management of the Monument
• Encourage cooperation with local volunteers, and advise on opportunities to enhance and expand existing partnerships and volunteer efforts
• Advise on opportunities for educational outreach
