BLM LIFTS FIRE RESTRICTIONS

With the onset of rains and cool fall weather, the Bureau of Land Management's Redding Field Office has announced the end of fire season, and lifted restrictions on outdoor uses of fire.

The restrictions on campfires and firewood cutting on BLM-managed public lands will be lifted Friday, Nov. 2.  The restrictions were in effect on public lands in Shasta, Butte, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity counties.

Back country visitors can again use campfires, with  campfire permits, outside of developed campgrounds and recreation sites.  BLM Fire Management Officer Walter Herzog cautioned that wildland visitors must still use caution with campfires.  Fires should be kept small and must be completely extinguished when breaking camp.

During this year's fire season 850 acres of BLM-managed lands were burned in 17 wildfires.  Herzog said only a few fires were caused by illegal campfires.  He said public observance of fire restrictions helped keep the number of human-caused fires to a minimum during a long and hot fire season.

Additional information on campfires is available from the Redding Field Office, (530) 224-2100.
