GUIDED HIKE TO FALK WITH AUTHOR OF FALK'S CLAIM
The author of "Falk's Claim," a book about the Humboldt County logging town of Falk, will lead a free interpretive walk to the historic town site Saturday, Dec. 1, at 10 a.m.
Author Jon Humboldt Gates will join Bureau of Land Management Park Ranger Julie Clark to lead the two-hour walk where participants can learn about the founding of the lumber town and the daily lives of the people who lived and worked there.
Participants will meet at the Headwaters Forest Reserve Elk River parking area, five miles south of Eureka at the end of Elk River Road, off U. S. 101. Parking is limited, and the BLM advises hikers to car pool and arrive early.
Falk is located along the trail about one mile from the Elk River Trailhead entrance to the Headwaters Reserve. Falk was built in the 1880s and was operated through the 1920s by Noah Falk as the Elk River Mill and Timber Company. Little of the town remains. There are clear vestiges of the town site, however, including trees and plants remaining where houses once stood.
