MEMBERS NAMED TO BLM NORTHWEST CALIFORNIA ADVISORY COUNCIL
Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton has named two northern California residents to new terms on the U. S. Bureau of Land Management's Northwest California Resource Advisory Council. The Secretary also re-appointed two council members to new terms on the 12-member citizen panel.
Newly appointed council members include Robert MacMullin, an Arcata forestry consultant, and Anne C. Read, a Red Bluff high school teacher. MacMullin will fill a three-year term in the council's public at large category. Read, who has long been involved in Sacramento River conservation issues, will represent dispersed recreation interests.
Reappointed to three-year terms on the council were Kneeland resident Diane Beck, representing national and regional environmental groups, and Redding resident Jim Cooksley, a geophysical engineer who represents energy and mineral interests.
The advisory council, one of 24 such councils in the western states, advises BLM managers in Arcata, Redding and Ukiah on programs and issues involving management of public lands and natural resources. Together, BLM's northwest California field offices are responsible for management of more than 600,000 acres of public lands.
The BLM, an agency of the U. S. Department of the Interior, manages 264 million acres of public lands - more than any other federal agency - primarily in the western states. The agency also manages more than 700 acres of subsurface mineral estate across the nation.
