MEMBERS NAMED TO BLM CITIZEN ADVISORY COUNCIL

The Bureau of Land Management's Northeast California Resource Advisory Council will welcome two new members and three returning members to the 15-person panel.  U. S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton recently announced the appointments of four members to fill three-year terms, and one new member to complete an unexpired term.

Newly appointed members are:

  • Daniel C. Cardenas, Jr. of Alturas.  The member of the Pit River Tribe will represent Native American interests.
  • Paul J. Spitler of Davis.  The executive director of the California Wilderness Coalition, Spitler will represent national/regional environmental organizations. He will fill the remainder of a term vacated by Kyle Haines of the Klamath Forest Alliance.

Susanville area rancher Jack Hanson was reappointed to a three-year term representing holders of federal livestock grazing permits. Modoc County Supervisor Nancy Huffman of Tulelake  also was reappointed, and will continue to represent local elected officials.  Wes Finley of Yuba City was reappointed to a three-year term representing wild horse and burro interests.

The advisory council, one of 24 such citizen councils in the western states, advises BLM managers in Alturas, Cedarville and Susanville on a variety of programs and issues involving management of public lands and natural resources.  Advisory council members represent diverse public lands interests including livestock grazing, recreation, environmental interests, historic and archaeological interests, off-highway vehicle recreation, wild horse and burro interests, state and local government, and the public at large.

The BLM, an agency of the U. S. Department of the Interior, manages 264 million acres of public lands - more than any other federal agency.  The agency also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation.
