Volunteers Remove Abandoned Vehicles from Public Lands
Members of the Santa Rosa 4x4 Club recently volunteered their time and expertise to help the Bureau of Land Management remove abandoned vehicles from the South Cow Mountain Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area near Ukiah.
A group of 23 club members worked in teams during their annual clean up weekend to extricate three cars from steep ravines where they had been wrecked and abandoned. One team had to work seven hours to move a car from the rugged terrain to a road where a towing company could haul it away.
"We are very grateful to the club for the assistance," said Bureau of Land Management Law Enforcement Ranger Doug Prado. "Club members' work saved the taxpayers more than $2,000 in extraction and towing fees. Without the help of volunteers, projects like this would not be possible."
Club members regularly assist the BLM with clean up work and trail maintenance at South Cow Mountain. Information on volunteer projects to benefit the public lands is available from the BLM's Ukiah Field Office, (707) 468-4000.
