BLM TO HOLD PLANNING MEETING FOR SOUTH FORK AMERICAN RIVER
The second of a series of public meetings to discuss plans for public lands along the historic South Fork American River in El Dorado County will be held Monday, September 11, 2000 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Room 14 of the Gold Trails Union School, 889 Cold Springs Road in the Coloma area by the Folsom Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management.
The BLM is using a community-based process to plan for the South Fork American River public lands The process could last up to a year, and depends on people with a wide range of viewpoints working together to find solutions to problems. The finished plan will specify appropriate levels of public use along with protection of the environment.
The BLM is responsible for approximately 3700 acres of public land scattered along the South Fork American from Chili Bar Dam to Salmon Falls Bridge. Some BLM parcels are currently heavily used by the public for a variety of purposes while others are not. The river itself is a very popular whitewater rafting attraction. There are also opportunities for hiking fishing, swimming, hobby prospecting, and similar activities.
