Public Lands Day Event to Improve Local Nature Trail
The Bureau of Land Management's Folsom Field Office announced today that it will sponsor volunteer work day to improve the nature trail at the Dave Moore Nature Area in Coloma as part of a nationwide celebration of National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 23, 2000.
The BLM's Dave Moore Nature Area is located about a mile downstream from the State Historic Park along the South Fork of the American River. It is the only trail on Federal land in the Coloma Valley specifically designed to accommodate disabled people. BLM Trails Coordinator Jeff Horn said help is needed in clearing brush (and poison oak) from the trail area, as well as filling in ruts to make the trail more accessible for the elderly and for persons in wheelchairs.
The Seventh Annual National Public Lands Day is an effort to bring outdoors-minded people together to give something back to America's public lands. "Our public lands are the envy of the world, said Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt. "It is through efforts like National Public Lands Day and the support of all Americans that we are able to show how much we really appreciate and value the recreational opportunities that they provide."
