BLM OFFERS GUIDED HIKES TO HISTORIC TOWN SITE
Free guided, interpretive walks to the historic lumber town of Falk, in the Headwaters Forest Reserve southeast of Eureka, will begin Saturday, Sept. 9, and continue each Saturday through Oct. 21.
The walks, led by Bureau of Land Management back-country ranger Julie Clark, will be begin at 10 a.m. and take about an hour-and-a-half to complete. The hike is a two-mile round trip.
Participants will meet at the Elk River parking lot, five miles south of Eureka, at the end of Elk River Road off Highway 101. The site, where only vestiges of the old mill town remain, is along the trail about a mile from the Elk River Trailhead entrance to the reserve. On the outing, Clark will share information about the logging history of the area, and the role Falk played. She will also provide information about the Headwaters Forest Reserve, which is now in public ownership.
Falk was built in the 1880s and was operated through the 1920s by Noah Falk as part of the Elk River Mill and Lumber Company. The railroad engine from the town is on display at Fort Humboldt.
