a look at the lighter side of BLM issues

The Ugly Burro

Scene opens with a book titled "The Ugly Duckling." A duck waddles across the scene and stops to read the title. The duck sprays a line of spray paint across the word "Duckling," and tacks up a piece of paper with "Burro" written on it. The title now reads, "The Ugly Burro." The duck quacks a disgruntled quack as he waddles away.

Life in the desert was hard.....

A desert landscape shows blue sky, mountains in the horizon, and a few plants in a barren desert landscape.

Food can be scarce....

A burro appears, looking downcast as he paws the ground.

It could be hot during the day.....

A burro is laying on the ground, trying to fit in the shade of a saguaro cactus. The hot sun has an evil face as he is enjoying making the burro miserable. A frying pan with a fried egg appears then disappears.

....and cold a night.

The burro is huddled as tight as can be and shivers in the cold night. An ice cube appears then disappears over him as he shakes.

...and a few friends...

The burro brays as he looks to the horizon and sees two other burros very far away.

...things looked pretty bleak, until.....The Round Up!

A sign with a BLM logo, the Wild Horse and Burro logo, and a rope appears. The burro is rounded up and brought to a corral with other burros. The burro looks happy, he has food, health care, and friends.

But slowly, day by day, "Sam's" friends were getting adopted...and nobody wanted him. The burro's friends were disappearing one by one and the burro was finally left alone.

...until one day....

The burro noticed a family - a man, a woman, and a little girl - standing outside the corral. The woman was pointed at the burro and the little girl was holding up a carrot. The burro looked up and instantly fell in love with the family. Hearts floated upward toward the sky.

The burro was loaded into a horse trailer and the words "Just Adopted" were painted on the back of the trailer. The trailer and truck drove down a country road to a farm.

Home Sweet Home

The burro found a home with other burros in a nice valley surrounded by mountains. A windmill and a water trough are nearby. The burro runs through the area with the other burros.

The little girl hugs the burro around the neck. The burro is so very happy, tears come to his eyes.

The Bureau of Land Management protects and manages wild horses and burros on the public lands under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

The Act requires BLM to maintain healthy herds in balance with the rangelands that sustain them.

When herd numbers exceed that balance, BLM rounds them up and makes them available to the public for adoption.
