It is strongly recommended that these data be aquired directly from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and not indirectly through some other source which may have changed the data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the content of the metadata file associated with these data. Users are cautioned that digitial enlargement of these data to scales larger than that at which they where originally mapped can cause misinterpretation. Users are further cautioned that these data and interpretations derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite survey and evaluation of specific sites for intensive uses.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management should be cited as the data source in any products derived from these data.
The file pplm4state.pat is the point attribute file. Item ppl_id is the
code which links the polygon with the attribute stored in the info table,
populated_place.tab. The item text_just provides information for carto-
graphic placement of text for place names. Item sclidx is used
for determining the appropriate scale at which to display text.

File populated_place.tab is an info file which contains the attributes for the
polygon data. Item ppl_id is the link between the polygon and info data. Item
name is the name of the populated place (city, town, etc.). Items us_state_id,
us_state_abv, and us_state_name provide information as to the state that the
populated place lies within. Item city_type provides a designation of the type
of populated place. Current values are CDP, city, division,and town. Item
population contains the value of the population at the 1990 census.
