It is strongly recommended that these data be aquired directly from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and not indirectly through some other source which may have changed the data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the content of the metadata file associated with these data. Users are cautioned that digitial enlargement of these data to scales larger than that at which they where originally mapped can cause misinterpretation. Users are further cautioned that these data and interpretations derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite survey and evaluation of specific sites for intensive uses.

California data set. Item coord_source is the only user defined item.
Item coord_source provides information regarding the source of the data
which provides the coordinates for each feature (arc). Values now used
for coord_source are as follows: 100k dlg, 24k map, caltrans, gps, st_hwy,

Data file hwylca.ratcounty is a route data file built on codes in the
major and minor dlg code pairs which designate arcs as representing
county designated roads (county highways). There are no user define
items in this data file. This route data is used in cartographic
symbolization of road types and highway symbol shields. There are
no user defined items in this data set. This route data is used i
cartographic symbolization of road types and highway symbol shields.

Data file hwylca.ratcrossing_type is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor dlg code pairs which designate the crossing
relationships of arcs in the roads data. Item crossing_type is the
only user defined item. Current values are OVERPASS, and UNDERPASS.
HWYLCA.RATINTERCHANGE:

9 INTERCHANGE_CODE 1 1 C -
Data file hwylca.ratinterchange is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor dlg code pairs which designate interchanges
for controlled access roads. Item interchange_code is the only user
defined item and is a flag. Current values are '' and y; y indicating
that the arc is an interchange. This route data is used in cartographic
symbolization of road types.

Data file hwylca.ratinterstate is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor dlg code pairs which designate the route
number for each arc which is on a numbered route. Item rout_des is
the only user defined item and it stores the Federal interstate highway
number for the interstate which the arc represents. Current values
are 10, 110, 15, 15E, 205, 210, 215, 280, 40, 405, 5, 505, 580, 605,

Data file hwylca.ratlan_division is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor dlg code pairs which designate the route
number for each arc which is on a numbered route. Item division_type
is the only user defined item and it stores information on highways
which are, for some reason, divided. Current values for division_type
are CENTERLINE, ONE WAY, SEPARATED, and UNDIVIDED. This route data
is used in cartographic symbolization of road types.

Data file hwylca.ratnumber_lane is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor dlg code pairs which disignate the number of
lanes in a highway, particularly divided highways. Item no_of_lanes
is the only user defined item and its value is the number of lanes.
This route data is used in cartographic symbolization of road types.
HWYLCA.RATRESERVATION:

Data file hwylca.ratreservation is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor code pairs which designate roads on reservation
lands. There are no user defined items in this data file. This route
data is used in cartographic symbolization of road types and highway
symbol shields.

Data file hwylca.ratstate is a route data file built on codes in the
major and minor code pairs which designate roads as State roads or
highways. Item route_des contains the route number for each arc
so designated. Current values for route_des in this data file are
integers between 1 and 839, and too numerous to list here. Some
numbers are actual character based with an A or other character
as a part of their number. This route data is used in cartographic
symbolization of road types and highway symbol shields.

Data file hwylca.rattravel_class is a route data file built on codes
in the major and minor code pairs which designate the USGS travel
class value for each arc so designated. One modification to this
has been done by BLM CA. USGS has two DLG travel class 5 codes: one
for wheeled vehicles and one for non-wheeled vehicles. BLM CA has
taken the non-wheeled vehicle class 5 arcs and designated them as
travel class 6. Item travel_class_id stores these travel class
identifiers for each arc so designated. Current values of travel_
