Title: COVERAGE HWYLCA -- Major highways in California
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Map
Publication_Information:
Publication_Place: Sacramento, CA
Publisher: U.S. Bureau of Land Management, California State Office

Description:
Abstract:
This coverage is an extraction of major roads and highways from the USGS 1:100,000 DLG data sets. The lines were pulled from the 100k's on the basis of USGS DLG codes. The data was then merged to make a state-wide coverage. Further attribution was done to capture route numbers and jurisdiciton (Federal, State, etc.).
Purpose:
This data set is to be used to portray the network of major roads over the entire state of California, or over large regions of California. It is designed to facilitate the symbolization of roads correctly in cartogarphic products.
Supplemental_Information:
These data rely heavily on USGS DLG Codes. Information about USGS DLG Codes may be found in the USGS Publication: US GeoData Digital Line Graphs from 1:100,000-Scale Maps, Data Users Guide 2.

These data are public information and may be used and interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others. The user has sole responsibilty for ensuring the appropriate application of these data and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management shall not be held liable for any use or misuse of the data described hereon.

It is strongly recommended that these data be aquired directly from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and not indirectly through some other source which may have changed the data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the content of the metadata file associated with these data. Users are cautioned that digitial enlargement of these data to scales larger than that at which they where originally mapped can cause misinterpretation. Users are further cautioned that these data and interpretations derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite survey and evaluation of specific sites for intensive uses.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management should be cited as the data source in any products derived from these data.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
This is estimated to be 95% accurate. This has been established through extensive edits, numerous on-screen and hard copy check plots, and many cartographic output products.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Chain-node topology present.
Completeness_Report:
The roads data has been generalized from the original 100k USGS DLGs so that only major roads are stored in this data set. As such, many arcs have been omitted fromt he original DLGs. However, no other generalizations have been performed on the data.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
This is estimated to be that of USGS 100k quads: + / - 120 feet.

Process_Description:
DLG data was imported off of USGS data CDs. Imported data sets were reselected on the basis of DLG codes to extract only major roads. Coverages of major roads were then merged into a single state-wide coverage. Additional attribution was added to make the data set useful in cartographic products. Route topology was then added to further enhance the cartographic usefulness of the data.
