hmapca - Herd Management Area

Frequently-asked questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title:
hmapca - Herd Management Area

Abstract:
The Herd Management Area coverage is polygon coverage of Wild horse and Burro use areas. A "Herd Area" is defined by the "Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Program Guidance, January 1983" as "The geographic area identified as having been used by a herd as its yearlong habitat in 1971" and a Herd Management Area" is defined as "A herd area identified in an approved land use plan where wild horses and burros will be maintain and managed.", boundaries and attributes were gathered from various maps and reports.

Supplemental information:
This data was merged into the National Data set in 2004, and then extracted for maintenance in 2005. Herd Management Areas extended onto USFS Herd Territories were pulled during the National merge with National, and other minor boundary adjustments were made for unknown reasons. The California Data has been reviewed and updated (name changes and PLSS allignment) in 2006.

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Attribute data was test by manual comparison of the sources data with symbolized display of the map data on an interactive computer graphic system. Data was also verified by natural resource staff familiar with the Wildhorse and Burro Program.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Coverage is based on data drawn on 1:24000 quadrangles and digitized on a tablet. The digitized maps were registered to .004 RMS or less, the accuracy of the hand drawn maps is unknown and the accuracy of the
digitized data is untested. The data was review by resource area staff and accuracy was determined to be reasonable.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

    Polygon topology present.

Generally, these data are intented for small scale (1:24,000 and smaller) natural resource management and planning applications. It is strongly recommended that these data be aquired directly from the U.S. Bureau of
Land Management and not indirectly through some other source which may have changed the data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the content of the metadata file associated with these data. Users
are cautioned that digitial enlargement of these data to scales larger than that at which they where originally mapped can cause misinterpretation. Users are further cautioned that these data and interpretations derived from them
do not eliminate the need for onsite survey and evaluation of specific sites for intensive uses.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management should be cited as the data source in any products derived from these data.
