Generally, these data are intented for small scale (1:24,000 and smaller) natural resource management and planning applications. It is strongly recommended that these data be aquired directly from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and not indirectly through some other source which may have changed the data. It is also strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the content of the metadata file associated with these data. Users are cautioned that digitial enlargement of these data to scales larger than that at which they where originally mapped can cause misinterpretation. Users are further cautioned that these data and interpretations derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite survey and evaluation of specific sites for intensive uses.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management should be cited as the data source in any products derived from these data.

49 STATE_COUNTY_FIP 5 5 C -
Data file ctypca.pat is the polygon attribute file. Item cty_id is a
arbitrary code of sequential integers, 0 through 180, used to tie a
polygon to information stored in informix tables. Item county stores
the name of the county in mixed case. Item state_fips stores the Federal
Information Processing Standard (FIPS code) code for the state of
California, which is 06. Item county_fips stores the FIPS code for
each county. This is a three digit integer in the range 001 - 115.
Item state_county_fip is redefined from state_fips and county_fips.
It combines them into one five digit integer ranging from 06001 to
06115.

File ctypca.aat is the arc attribute file for the data set. Item jur_level
stores the jurisdictional level for the particular arc. Values are county,
national, and state. This provides the ability to properly symbolize these
boundaries in a cartographic product. Item source identifies the source of
coordinate values for the arc. This value is currently 24k quad for all arcs.
Item def_feature stores the natural or man-made feature which is, by definition,
forming the boundary in question. Values for def_feature are COAST, LAND GRANT,
MILITARY RESERVE, OBLIQUE, PLSS, RIDGE, STREAM, and UNKNOWN. Item def_feature
_rel provides information about the position of the arc relative to the
coordinates of the defining feature. Current values are CENTER LINE, COINCIDENT,
and UNKNOWN.
CTYPCA.NAT:
COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 ARC# 4 5 B -
5 CTYPCA# 4 5 B -
9 CTYPCA-ID 4 5 B -
Data file ctypca.nat is the node attribute file for the data set.
Currently it has no non-system defined items or attributes.
CTYPCA.LST:
COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 COUNTY 20 20 C -
21 FREQUENCY 4 5 B -
25 SUM-AREA 8 18 F 6
Data file ctypca.lst is an info file from the statistics command in
Arc/Info. It simply lists the number of polygons with each county
name as an attribute, and sums the square meter area for each county.
CTYPCA.PATCOUNTY:
COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME

9 PERIMETER 8 18 F 5
17 COUNTY# 4 5 B -
21 COUNTY-ID 4 5 B -
25 COUNTY 20 20 C -
Data file ctypca.patcounty is a regions data type built on the ctypca
polygon data set, using item county (which stores the county name) as
the item the regions are built upon. Item county stores the county name.
This data enables counties to be symbolized in cartogarphic products.
CTYPCA.PATSTATE:

9 PERIMETER 8 18 F 5
17 STATE# 4 5 B -
21 STATE-ID 4 5 B -
25 STATE_FIPS 2 2 C -
Data file ctypca.patstate is a regions data type built on the ctypca
polygon data set, using state fips code as the item the regions are
built upon. This allows the state to be symbolized in cartogarphic products.
CTYPCA.RATCARTO_FEATURE:
COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 CARTO_FEATURE# 4 5 B -
5 CARTO_FEATURE-ID 4 5 B -
9 FEATURE 10 10 C -
Data file ctypca.ratcarto_feature is a route data type built on the
ctypca arc data set on item def_feature. Values for item feature are
COAST, LAND GRANT, MILITARY RESERVE, OBLIQUE, PLSS, RIDGE, STREAM,
and UNKNOWN. This route data set allows symbolization of the
defining features which are boundaries in a way which is understandable.
CTYPCA.SECCARTO_FEATURE:
Data file ctypca.seccarto_feature is only a section file used internally
in the Arc/Info software in creating topology for the carto_feature
routes data above.
CTYPCA.TMP:
COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME
1 CTY_ID 4 4 I -
5 COUNTY 20 20 C -
Data file ctypca.tmp is an info file which merely lists all occurrences
of cty_id with the value of the county for the polygon.
