Subject:
Rangeland Health Standards and Guidelines for California and Northwest Nevada, Draft DEIS

The Bureau of Land Management has issued the above listed Draft EIS for review and comment before August 31, 1997. Attached is a sample letter for your Board to consider in responding to this DEIS.

In 1993, the BLM initiated an effort called "Rangeland Reform 94" to better enhance the environmental health of public rangelands. As a part of that effort, in May 1995, the BLM created Resource Advisory Councils (RACs). These RACs were organized on the previous BLM District boundaries in California for the Susanville, Ukiah and Bakersfield Districts. These RACs include representatives from County Boards of Supervisors. In California, the elected officials selected are as listed above.

After reviewing the DEIS and the four alternatives listed, we recommend that Alternative I be supported. Alternative 1, the proposed action, consists of the standards and guidelines developed by the three RACs for their representative areas. These RACs are made up of citizens from various interests including; off-road vehicle use, commercial recreation, mining, energy, federal grazing, commercial timber, historical, archeological, Native American, the public at large and national and regional environmental.
