Lacks Creek Plan Open for Public Comment: The U. S. Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comments on a preliminary plan to conserve natural resources and provide public recreation opportunities in the forests and prairies of the Lacks Creek watershed northeast of Eureka. The plan calls for a variety of actions including forest and watershed restoration treatments, improving oak woodlands, prairies and wildlife habitat, and continuing an inventory of sites important to Native American tribes and to local history.  Other proposed actions include removal of some roads, improving roads for recreation access and developing a trail system for hiking, equestrian use and mountain biking. Camping would be limited to designated sites.

Trail Open: The Headwater Forest Reserve's Elk River Trail is now open for public use.  The trail was closed from July 28 to August 8, 2008, to allow work on the trailhead and parking areas.  Maintenance personnel will continue to work on the trail through the remainder of the summer.

ATTENTION: Fire Restrictions are in place for the King Range NCA and Northwestern California Public Lands .  It is illegal to use or possess any fireworks, including Safe and Sane, on any public lands within the King Range National Conservation Area.  For specific details please refer to Fire Prevention Order Number CA-330-08-02 .
