Wild Burro Gather

Bait Trapping initiated August 4, 2013

Goal of the Gather:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado River District, Kingman and Lake Havasu field offices will use bait trapping to gather and remove wild burros on private lands outside the Big Sandy Herd Management Area (HMA) and on private lands within the Havasu HMA along the Colorado River in California. The bait trapping and removal has been requested by land owners in the respective areas due to wild burros creating hazardous situations along public highways and within an active mine. The field offices have completed Categorical Exclusions in accordance with 516 DM 11.9.

Details of the Gather:

The BLM plans to gather approximately 36 wild burros on private lands in the vicinity of the Freeport-McMoRan Mine at Bagdad, Arizona. These wild burros are outside the Big Sandy HMA. Wild burros have been discovered in the open pit, and on other active mining properties. The BLM also plans to gather approximately 24 wild burros utilizing private lands within the Havasu HMA. These wild burros are moving between the Colorado River west onto private lands and are a public hazard along a heavily traveled highway in the area. There have been numerous automobile/wild burro collisions over the last five months.

The BLM will not offer public observation opportunities because the trap sites are located on private property and for public safety reasons.

Adoption:

Wild burros removed from these two areas will be transported to the BLM Ridgecrest Wild Horse and Burro Facility in Ridgecrest, California, to be prepared for the BLM wild burro adoption program.
