Wickenburg Community Trails Master Plan
To improve recreational opportunities and facilities in the greater Wickenburg area, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Hassayampa Field Office, is now closer to finalizing a travel management plan. Once approved, this would enable the designation of improved roads, primitive roads, and trails within 100,000 acres of federal public lands northwest of Phoenix, Arizona.

The BLM currently works in tandem with Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department to identify a trails-network, create a management plan for natural areas and identify recreational facilities. The primary goals are to ensure the management of natural and cultural resources and to make sure that existing and future recreation sites are well connected to Wickenburg as a recreation hub. An environmental assessment is nearly complete for this area and we have now identified four options, called alternatives, for managing these lands:

  • Alternative 1 maximizes recreation use
  • Alternative 2 maximizes conservation
  • Alternative 3 improves recreational opportunities while protecting natural resource and is the agency’s preferred alternative
  • Alternative 4 represents status quo – taking no action

These alternatives were developed in collaboration with Wickenburg area residents and other stakeholders through a series of public meetings conducted since October 2009. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has participated in developing alternative routes for this area that protect wildlife.

Prior to issuing a final document, the BLM will present management alternatives to the public and obtain additional input. Comments are due by July 11, 2011, in order to finalize the planning document by December 2011.

  • Monday, June 27 - BLM Public Meeting at the Wickenburg Community Center from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to summarize public input received and present the preferred alternative for trail systems and staging areas.
  • Tuesday, June 28 - Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department Public Meeting at the Wickenburg Community Center at 6:30 to discuss proposed facilities for the Vulture Mountain area.
