Description: The Table Mesa Recreation Area comprises approximately 11,557 acres. The area becomes congested with recreationists because it is easily accessed via Interstate 17 from Phoenix. Hikers, OHV enthusiasts, and campers may not be seen easily by target shooters, so be aware of other recreational activities in the area.
Directions: From Phoenix, travel north on Interstate 17. Take Exit 236 and turn west. Turn north on the frontage road which leads into the recreation area.
Visitor Activities: Visitors to Table Mesa will find:
- 55 miles of OHV riding;
- an OHV training area;
- a technical vehicle user site of over 4 acres;
- hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking on the meandering non-motorized Black Canyon National Recreation Trail;
- access to Lake Pleasant from the northeast;
- target shooting opportunities in areas with a safe backstop (an earthen mound a minimum of 25 feet wide and 15 feet high); (hot link to new page) and
- dispersed camping and picnicking.
Special Features: Trailhead to the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail (80+ mile trail) and an OHV training site.
Permits, Fees and Limitations: No fees are required for casual use. Special uses including commercial operations, fundraising or organized group events, will require a Special Recreation Permit. Contact the Hassayampa Field Office to determine if a permit is needed for your proposed activity.
Accessibility: Restrooms are accessible.
Camping and Lodging: Dispersed camping is available throughout the recreation area, or at local accommodations in Anthem and Black Canyon City.
Food and Supplies: Restaurants can be found in New River, Anthem, and Black Canyon City. Supplies are available in Anthem and Black Canyon City.
First Aid: John C. Lincoln is the nearest hospital. From Table Mesa drive south on Interstate 17 to Exit 215 and follow the signs. Urgent Care facilities are located in Anthem with limited hours.
