This abandoned copper mine was once the richest in Arizona. At the peak of production, the site employed nearly 80 people. Various mining buildings can be seen, all in varying stages of deterioration. Most of them were constructed around the turn of the last century.   The site included a rock bunkhouse and a rock cookhouse. Mining continued until 1918. A fire in the 1950's claimed most of the mine buildings, leaving only stone walls.

 

Grand Gulch mine is located approximately 90 miles SW of St. George, UT via very rough roads.

 

From St George, - Take Quail Hill Road (BLM Road 1069) to Main Street Valley Road (County Road 5), turn right onto County Road 103 for 25 miles. Turn right on to BLM Road 1002 and continue another 14 miles to the mine site. The mine is 50 air miles SW of St. George. A small rough airstrip is located south of the mine.

Permits and fees are not required.

 

A four-wheel drive vehicle is needed to access the site. The site is not wheelchair accessible.

 

Dispersed camping is available within the Monument and on surrounding public lands. The nearest developed campground is within the Virgin River Recreation Area along Interstate 15.

Cell phones do not have reception in this area. The mine itself is privately owned. Please respect private property and the historic nature of the buildings.
