There are two campgrounds within the Gila Box. There is a fee to use the campgrounds. Fees are used to maintain campground and day use facilities, remove trash, maintain access roads and trails, construct new interpretive signs and replace vandalized signs and to produce brochures, maps and website information.
Campground fees are $5.00 per day, per site and include two vehicles per site. Additional vehicles are charged $2.00 per vehicle, per day. Campers may stay a maximum of five days.
For those floating the river, a permit fee of $3.00 per person, per trip is collected, with a maximum trip length of five days. Backcountry primitive camping opportunities are available at Bonita Creek and within the Gila River.
The fees are paid at self-service pay stations located at the campgrounds and the river put-in area at the Old Safford Bridge south of Clifton. Holders of America the Beautiful Senior or Access Passes are entitled to a 50 percent reduction of the campground fees.
