The Ponderosa pine forests on the strip have a logging history dating back to the early 1870's. Timber removed from the Parashant was utilized as mine timbers while lumber taken from the Mount Trumbull area was used to build the Mormon Temple in St. George, Utah. Due to past logging practices, heavy grazing and the suppression of naturally caused fires, the forests of today consist of dense stands of 75 to 100 year-old trees with heavy fuel loading on the forest floor. Under these conditions, the forests are vulnerable to catastrophic fires.
