Phoenix Area Public Lands & Facilities Reopen and Events Resuming

(Thursday, October 17, 2013) – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Phoenix District is pleased to announce the immediate reopening of the Painted Rock Petroglyph Site & Campground southwest of Phoenix. This camping area had been closed during the government shutdown.

Additionally, restroom facilities that had been closed within the Agua Fria National Monument (north of Phoenix) and the Sonoran Desert National Monument (southwest of Phoenix), the Table Mesa and Boulders Recreation Areas are now in the process of reopening.

Off-Highway Vehicle “Show Me Rides” Resume This Weekend

The BLM and Arizona Off-Highway (OHV) Ambassadors are offering guided tours of fun places to ride All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Have you recently purchased an ATV, UTV, motorcycle or Jeep and want to know where to ride or wheel off-highway? The Ambassadors can lead the way to fun just outside of the Phoenix area through “Show Me Rides” events this fall at the very popular Boulders/Hieroglyphic Mountains and Table Mesa OHV locations. This “Show Me” experience will introduce you to the area by reviewing maps, explaining the types of trails available in the area, review proper riding/wheeling etiquette/safety information, and taking a ride around the area with the OHV Ambassadors.

This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
