Prescribed Burn Planned Along the Gila River

Palo Verde, ArizonaTo reduce the occurrence and potential intensity of wildfires along the Gila River corridor, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will conduct a prescribed burn between October 8, – November 3, 2012, about two miles south of Palo Verde, Arizona.  The prescribed burn will occur on the day(s) when weather conditions are most favorable and will last from one to five days within that time period.

Firefighters will burn Salt Cedar that has encroached native vegetation along the Gila River. To improve the habitat for native vegetation, the Salt Cedar was recently cut and stacked in piles over a 300-acre area.  Now, firefighters will ignite those piles.

The actual day(s) for the burn will be determined when weather conditions and air quality allow for safe burning. Residents should expect smoke to be visible in the area during the burn operation, with smoldering to occur a few days more. Fire crews will remain on site and monitor conditions following all prescribed burn activities.

The BLM greatly appreciates your cooperation in protecting yourpublic lands by helping to prevent unwanted wildfires. To report a wildfire call (866) 746-6516Current fire conditions/restriction information can also be foundonline at www.azfireinfo.com

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. In Fiscal Year 2012, activities on public lands generated $4.6 billion in revenue, much of which was shared with the States where the activities occurred. In addition, public lands contributed more than $112 billion to the U.S. economy and helped support more than 500,000 jobs.
