February Program Schedule Announced


St. George, Utah  Please plan to attend the noontime lecture series at the Interagency Information Center, located at 345 E. Riverside Drive in St. George. Programs begin at noon and last for one hour. Admission is free, but space is limited for this popular lecture series. Obtain tickets in advance from the Interagency Information Center to reserve a seat.  

The lecture series is sponsored by the Dixie/Arizona Strip Interpretive Association, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service. For more information call 435-688-3246. 

February 5: A Color Country Camera Club Double-header
You are invited to join local photographers Shirley Surfus and Duke Brietenbach on a photographic journey to discover some of the highlights of the wonderful natural world surrounding us everyday.
         
February 12: A Hero’s Journey - Theodore Roosevelt’s Preservation of Our National Treasures. 
President Theodore Roosevelt once remarked, “It is not what we have that will make us a great nation; it is the way in which we use it.” His vision and courage breathed life into those profound words. Dr. Dick Harper will discuss the foundations of Roosevelt’s life that set him on the journey of the hero to preserve our “national treasures” for posterity.
 
February 19: Getting Familiar with the Rocks Around Us.
Join BLM Geologist Ken Shurtz and explore a top-to-bottom dissection of the beautiful lands north of the Grand Canyon in Arizona and extending up into southern Utah.
 
February 26:  Mountain Meadows Revisited: Join Dr. Leo Lyman for a fresh look into one of the most significant and lasting historical events to occur in southern Utah. 


The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
