Prescribed Burning Planned for the Hualapai Mountains

Kingman, AZ - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Kingman Field Office in cooperation with the Pine Lake Fire Department will be conducting a prescribed burn in the Hualapai Mountains in the coming weeks.  Approximately 250 acres of dense brush will be burned on south-facing slopes south of the Pine Lake community.   The primary goal of this project is to reduce the wildfire threat to the community of Pine Lake.

BLM personnel will ignite the burn, weather permitting, as early as February 4, 2010, and should complete the project in two or three days. The burn is being conducted at this time to minimize any potential threat to Pine Lake.  Safe weather conditions for burning this project include existing snow cover on north slopes to insure that the fire remains on the south facing slopes. Smoke from the burn may be visible at times from Pine Lake and Kingman, but should not have a significant impact on area residents or roadways.

Roads accessing the burn area will be closed temporarily and monitored by fire personnel during the burn operations for public safety. For additional information please contact the BLM at (928) 718-3700.

The BLM manages more land - over 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
