Prescribed Fire on Goodwin Mesa |

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Colorado River District, Kingman Field Office will be treating approximately 1800 acres of grasslands on Goodwin Mesa about 50 miles southeast of Kingman in the Upper Burro Creek Wilderness Area. Weather permitting, burning may begin as early as Friday, June 26th and is expected to be completed within two to three days after ignition. “There’s a very narrow window of opportunity to complete this prescribed burn,” said Wade Reaves, BLM Kingman Fuels Management Specialist. “Our crews will create a blackline around the perimeter of the area first to create a safe burning environment. We’ll also be using natural barriers to ensure control and protect the surrounding area.” The BLM manages more land - 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
