For Release: October 1, 2008 Contact: Scott Sticha, Public Affairs Specialist (435) 688-3303 Prescribed Fires Planned for Arizona StripSt. George, Utah – Bureau of Land Management (BLM) fire managers plan to conduct several prescribed burns on the Arizona Strip District during October when weather and fuel conditions permit. The prescribed burns are intended to decrease future wildfire risk, protect life and property, and benefit natural resources. Four prescribed burns ranging in size from 60 to 164 acres are currently planned for implementation as early as October 7. Prescribed fires help to reduce fuel accumulations and restore the fire-adapted ponderosa pine forest ecosystem in the Mount Trumbull area. Smoke may be present for several days and could reduce visibility along roads in this remote area. Public access may be restricted during ignition and periods of active fire spread to ensure safety. Signs will be posted to notify motorists and staff will be available to escort vehicles if necessary. Prescribed fires must meet certain weather-related and environmental factors prior to ignition. BLM fire staff will manage and monitor the prescribed fire activity. Smoke emissions will be managed in accordance with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality regulations. For more information, please call the BLM office at 435-688-3200 or 3360. – BLM –
