For Release: June 10, 2008 Contacts: Pamela Mathis (623) 580-5509 or (602) 402-7690 Ken Shaver (623) 580-5578 or (602) 320-8190 Prescribed Burn Planned at Agua Fria National Monument (BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz) — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has scheduled a two-day prescribed burn within the Agua Fria National Monument in mid June. Depending upon weather conditions, the burn will occur within June 11 – 22, 2008. Monument officials plan the burn to reduce vegetation that could otherwise fuel a much larger wildfire. Over decades, prickly pear cactus and woody vegetation have encroached on the Monuments grassland, and 2,600 acres will be burned to enhance growth of native plants that also improve wildlife habitat. BLM fire personnel will ignite the vegetation from both the ground and by helicopter when the weather presents the best conditions. Once ignited, the vegetation is expected to burn quickly, but may smolder for a few days. Residents in the Black Canyon City, the Cordes Junction area or those driving on I-17 may see the fire located five miles east of Cordes Junction. Smoke should disperse out of the area in a short time. Fire crews monitor the burned area during and after all prescribed burns. The BLM greatly appreciates cooperation in protecting ourpublic lands by preventing unwanted wildfires. To report a wildfire call (800) 309-7081. - BLM -
