August 29th Seminar to Feature CCC History

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Safford Field Office will host a “Brown Bag” lecture on August 29 that will highlight an important part of local history. “The History of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the Depression Era” will be presented by Kathrine “Katie” Neilsen, an interpretive ranger from Chiricahua National Monument.

Numerous CCC camps were located in southeastern Arizona and several were near Safford; most visible is the Sanchez Camp just north of the Safford Airport. Others were based on Mt. Graham and along the Black Hills Back Country Byway.

Come learn more about the men who participated in this historic work program. The free presentation will begin at noon on Friday at the BLM office located at 711 14th Avenue. Bring your lunch and enjoy the talk! The seminar is another in the ongoing series of presentations offered by the BLM and EAC’s Discovery Park throughout the year.

For more information about this and future seminars, or if you would like to present a talk related to natural or cultural history, call Dave Arthun at 928-348-4428.
