Comment Period Begins on Qwest Fiber Optic Project
City of Maricopa to Town of Gila Bend

(PHOENIX, Az.)—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Phoenix District Office accepts public comments now through May 30th on an Environmental Assessment regarding the proposed installation of fiber optic cable stretching 18.5 miles of public lands – primarily in the Sonoran Desert National Monument between the City of Maricopa and Town of Gila Bend, Arizona.

Qwest Corporation (Qwest) proposes installing the buried fiber optic cable for a backup emergency 911 network for the communities of Gila Bend, Casa Grande, Coolidge, Maricopa, Florence, Eloy, Arizona City, Stanfield, and Sacaton. The project would be constructed within the existing rights of way of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), on the north side of State Route 238 (Maricopa Road).

Interested parties are encouraged to review the Environmental Assessment at http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/info/nepa/environmental_library/ea-qwestcable.html and address comments to: Jim Andersen, BLM Phoenix District, 21605 N. 7th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. 85027; or email at: Jim_Andersen@blm.gov; or for more information, call: 623-580-5570.
