BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SAN PEDRO RIPARIAN NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA

On May 10, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will observe the 20th anniversary of the designation of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, from 11 a.m. to noon at the BLM’s San Pedro House located seven miles east of Sierra Vista on Highway 90.

In addition, the International Migratory Bird Day Spring Festival will celebrate the return of migratory birds to the San Pedro River. The event is sponsored by the BLM, the Sonoran Joint Venture and the Coronado National Forest. The Festival is free to the public and will include hands-on activities and workshops for children and adults, guided nature walks, hummingbird banding, a live reptile display, informational displays and booths, live music, food and carriage rides. The Festival events begin at 7 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

In 1996, the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area was named the first Globally Important Bird Area in North America. The river provides critical habitat for approximately 375 species and millions of individuals of migratory and resident birds each year.

Spring Festival activities begin at 7 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. Information about the event, including a detailed schedule of activities and directions to the site, is available at http://www.sonoranjv.org or contact the BLM San Pedro office at 520-439-6400.
