Are there hiking trails?

There are no hiking trails in Coyote Buttes. It is part of the Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, designated by Congress in 1984. The majority of the area is slickrock terrain, so trails are unnecessary, but good backcountry navigation skills are.

step carefully! Step carefully on the sandstone, there are many delicate features that break easily. Do your part to leave the wilderness WILD!

What kind of footwear is best?

Lightweight hikers or trail runners work best. Heavy, lug sole boots are unnecessary and can slip on sandstone.

What about hiking with my dog?

Dogs are allowed in Coyote Buttes on a conditional basis. Your dog should be kept under control at all times. Do not let them approach other hikers. Barking can disturb other hikers. Please bring an airtight bag and pack out their waste.
