The city annexation ordinances are derived from a variety of methods. If annexations, as described in the Department of Revenue city change ordinances legal description, follow township, range, section, hydrography, or road lines, the coincident arcs are copied from those datasets to the cities layer. Otherwise, the ordinances are digitized or input using coordinate geometry.
Population estimates are updated by the Arizona Commerce Authority annually every January. We get those estimates and percent population change from year 2000 figures from the Arizona Commerce Authority. That information is then entered manually into the Cities attributes table. For the year 2010, population estimates from the official US Census 2010 were used insead of estimates from the Arizona Commerce Authority.
Digitized boundaries are obtained from cities directly when possible and used for clarification purposes. When city data is not available, data from counties may be used. This is an ongoing process. Refer to Source Information for specific data acquisitions.
