Title: Fire In Alaska

The spread of the Spruce Bark Beetle in Alaska, and particulary in the Anchorage hillside, has continued over the last decade at a level unprecedented to scientific observers. This outbreak has created an extreme wildfire hazard. The crisis also creates an opportunity to educate Alaskan children about the physics and chemistry of fire, its natural role in Alaskan ecosystems, forest and fire managment, and how to assess fire danger to homes and act to reduce the risk of catastrophic life and property.

This very popular class is aimed at but not limited to educators, grades 5-8. Credit will be FREE- sponsored by Western State Fire Managers. The course, ED 580R, features dynamic curriculum that provides educators with the knowledge and materials to teach fire ecology, fire behavior, and fire safety. The class is hands on and completion entitles participants to check out fire trunks loaded with teaching materials.

This 15 hour credit course includes a curriculum guide and a complete classsroom kit. The curriculum is action oriented and centers around three core concepts:
  1. Fire behavior-we do play with matches in structured lab
  2. Fire Ecology- the Role of Fire in Alaskan ecosystems
  3. Assessment and Mitigation-students learn to assess fire danger and act to reduce risk.
Fire in Alaska is certified by ASD/MSBSD for salary schedule placement and attending the workshop qualifies participants for credit towards INCPA Standard II..
