Adult and Family Programs-where everybody has fun learning

Lectures, Classes & Workshops

                                                       Public Programs (Free!)

Fireside Chats—Our monthly slide lecture series runs from October through May (typically the third Wednesday of the month) and features a different science or natural resources topic each month. Programs begin at 7 p.m. Hot drinks and cookies provided. We hope you can join us by the fire!

Astronomy Lecture Series—Our monthly slide lecture series occurs November through March and is organized in partnership with the Chugach Stargazer Society. Programs begin at 7 p.m. Dress warmly for stargazing afterwards if the skies are clear! Hot drinks provided.

Midsummer Night Science Series—Our summer science series occurs on Wednesday evenings from June through August. Participants learn about science and natural resource management through a combination of lecture and experiential activities. Programs begin at 7 p.m.

Early Morning Bird Walks—Join us each May as we team up with the Anchorage Audubon Society for a series of weekly bird walks on Campbell Tract. Led by expert birders, these walks provide participants the opportunity to witness the progression of songbird migration through Campbell Tract and to develop and fine tune their birding skills. Dress appropriately for the weather and for walking on uneven terrain. Enjoy hot cocoa and coffee indoors after the walks are over.

Celebrating Women in Science—Join us each March for a special program in honor of National Women’s History Month. Past programs have included panel discussions, interactive sessions with women scientists, and a snowshoe hike adventure.

Adult Classes & Workshops (Fee Based)

Each year we offer a variety of adults-only classes designed to increase participants’ knowledge and skills in particular areas. Below are some of the programs we have offered in recent years. Be sure to check our calendar periodically for announcements of upcoming classes. Also note that class sizes are limited, pre-registration is required, and classes usually fill up quickly!

A Naturalist’s Introduction—Learn to look at the world through a naturalist’s eyes. This five-part summer class improves participants’ observation and recording skills as they learn more about Alaskan mammals, birds, and other living things. All materials provided. Participants may sign up for individual classes, but preference is given to those who sign up for the entire series.

The Art of the Journal—This introduction to field drawing class is taught by a local artist. It covers the elements of design and composition; focuses on drawing natural objects; and includes overlapping, shading, and modeling perspective. Each class in this five-part summer series focuses on a different media and includes exercises to practice techniques with each one. Students provide their own sketch pads; all other materials are provided. Participants may sign up for individual classes, but preference is given to those who sign up for the entire series.

Alaska Forest Ecology Workshop—This two-day workshop is offered through the Anchorage School District Academy held at the end of the academic school year. Designed for elementary teachers, it introduces key ecological concepts through activities teachers can do with their students.

In addition to the programs listed above, we can also design a custom program to meet the needs of your group. Want to provide a special in-service training on natural history topics? Looking for a bonding experience for an employee retreat? Trying to find a unique field trip for a conference? Or just wanting a fun break during a long meeting? We offer a variety of topics for adults including team building, nature explorations, snowshoeing adventures, and in-depth investigations of creek and forest ecosystems. We work with you to determine the theme, topics, and timeframe.
