FAIRBANKS, AK – FAIRBANKS, AK – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is extending the comment period for the Kobuk-Seward Peninsula Draft Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (RMP/EIS) through September 15, 2006. The original 90-day period of public review and comment began on May 5, 2006, and was to end on August 4, 2006.
The comment period was extended by BLM Acting State Director Julia Dougan. The Northwest arctic Borough, the Maniilaq Association and several individuals requested an extension to give rural residents directly affected by the plan additional time to review and understand the alternatives.
The RMP/EIS will, when completed, provide management guidance for resource decisions on 13.1 million acres of BLM-administered public land in northwest Alaska.
During the comment period, the public is invited to review and comment on the range and adequacy of draft alternatives and associated environmental effects developed by BLM resource specialists. For comments to be most helpful, they should relate to specific concerns or conflicts that are within BLM’s legal responsibilities and that can be resolved in this planning process.
Community meetings and ANILCA Section 810 Hearings were held in Shaktoolik, Koyuk, Nome, Buckland, Noorvik, Kiana, Ambler, Point Hope, Kivalina and Kotzebue. Public meetings on the draft plan were also held in Anchorage and Fairbanks.
The Kobuk-Seward Peninsula Draft RMP/EIS is available in print and on compact disc by contacting Jeanie Cole via email at email@example.com or via phone at 907-474-2340. Written comments should be mailed or hand delivered to: BLM Fairbanks District Office, ATTN: Kobuk-Seward Peninsula RMP/EIS, 1150 University Avenue, Fairbanks, AK 99709-3844.
