In honor of the last year of the Iditarod National Historic Trail’s 2008-2012 Centennial Celebration, Dan Seavey will be the ‘Centennial Musher’ during the 2012 Iditarod Sled Dog Race, mushing his sled dogs to Nome. Seavey will help bring America’s “last great goldrush trail” alive during this BLM-permitted race that venerates the dogs of Alaska’s past while celebrating the dogs of today. As Seavey rides those 1,000-plus miles to Nome, he’ll be accompanied by the rich history of the Trail. The people, dogs, sleds, freight, mail, and gold over the years will be remembered.

The BLM and Dan Seavey join the Iditarod Historic Trail Alliance and its partners, including the Chugach National Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, State of Alaska, Native corporations, local governments, nonprofit organizations, and the Iditarod Trail Committee, to promote the history, use, protection and development of the Iditarod National Historic Trail. The Alliance’s trail-wide initiatives including the Iditarod National Historic Trail Centennial (2008-2012), Iditarod Trail to Every Classroom (iTrec!), Alaska Department of Natural Resource’s Iditarod Trail Easement Project, community trial and shelter cabin stewardship and maintenance program, and historic transportation.
