NPR-A Oil and Gas Lease Sale Results

In an oil and gas lease sale held by the Bureau of Land Management in Anchorage on Aug. 11, ConocoPhillips submitted bids totaling $799,995 on five tracts in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The tracts are located adjacent to ConocoPhillips’ existing units, the Greater Mooses Tooth and Bear Tooth in northeast NPR-A. A map and table with the sale results are online at www.blm.gov/ak.

“ConocoPhillips’ investment underscores the importance of NPR-A exploration in meeting the nation’s long-term energy needs,” said Julia Dougan, acting BLM-Alaska State Director.

The State of Alaska will receive 50 percent of the NPR-A lease sale bid receipts, or $399,997.50.

The lease sale offered 190 tracts totaling 1.8 million acres within the Northeast planning areas of the NPR-A. There are 310 authorized oil and gas leases totaling 3,026,633 acres in the NPR-A.

The BLM manages 245 million acres – more land than any other federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including 75 million acres in Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
