FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE News Release No. FDO072108
BLM Closes Wickersham Creek Trail Area to Summer and Fall Motorized Use FAIRBANKS, AK — The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Eastern Interior Field Office has seasonally closed the Wickersham Creek Trail Area to motorized use. The closure is effective May 1 to October 14. This decision will not affect non-motorized or winter motorized activities. According to Lenore Heppler, Field Manager for the Eastern Interior Field Office, the closure is necessary to prevent further trail degradation and resource damage caused by motorized use during the summer and fall. Without a seasonal closure, the potential for additional damage from unrestricted use of off-highway vehicles is substantial and significant. This closure will help protect the trail for non-motorized summer use and for winter use by all users. The closed area includes the Wickersham Creek Trail between the Trail Creek Trail junction and the Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River corridor, including the Eleazar's Cabin Trail, and lands between the Wickersham Creek Trail and the Summit Trail. The closure will remain in effect until rescinded or modified by the Eastern Interior Field Office Manager. View a downloadable map (pdf/220 kb) of the closure area. The Eastern Interior Area stretches from Fairbanks to the US–Canada border and contains about 7.4 million acres of BLM-managed lands including the White Mountains National Recreation Area. For more information about the closure, contact the Eastern Interior Field Office recreation staff at (907) 474-2200. ### The BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages 258 million surface acres — more land than any other federal agency. Most of this public land is in 12 Western states, including 80.8 million surface acres in Alaska. The Bureau also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on the public lands.
