BLM Schedules Additional Public Scoping MeetingsFor Eastern Interior Planning Area
FAIRBANKS, AK — The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Eastern Interior Field Office will hold a number of public scoping meetings for the Eastern Interior Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. The Eastern Interior planning area stretches from Fairbanks to the US–Canada border and contains about 8 million acres of BLM-managed lands. Scoping meetings are held early in a planning process to help familiarize the public with the project and to gather issues, concerns and ideas that the plan should address. The scoping period for the Eastern Interior Resource Management Plan started March 1 and will end August 1, 2008. "Scoping is an important first step in the public involvement process," said Eastern Interior Field Manager Lenore Heppler. "Scoping is an informal process of two-way information sharing and gathering between the BLM and the public. It gives the public a significant voice and opportunity to help shape and direct our planning process."
Meetings may include an Open House prior to the meeting. Additional scoping meetings may be scheduled in other communities and announced through the news media and on the BLM Web site at www.blm.gov/ak. For more information, visit BLM's Eastern Interior RMP Web site or contact Jeanie Cole, Planning Team Leader, Eastern Interior Field Office at 907-474-2340. ### The BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages 258 million surface acres — more land than any other federal agency. Most of this public land is in 12 Western states, including 80.8 million surface acres in Alaska. The Bureau also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on the public lands.
