John Babel Cabin Restoration
An historic cabin in the Valdez Creek Mining district was partially stabilized by GFO Staff and the help of three visiting volunteers from a North Carolina trail hiking club. The John Babel Rock Cabin is dated to the 1920’s and is unique in that it is one of the few known rock cabin’s dating from that period in Alaska. It is endangered by erosion and the potential collapse of its rock walls. The most critical parts of the structure were stabilized recently, including the collapsing doorway as well as the back wall, which is leaning approximately 20 degrees out.
