White Mountains 100 Race

| | Start of last year's White Mountains 100 race. |
The BLM's Eastern Interior Field Office recently issued a permit for the second White Mountains 100 human-powered endurance race, which will take place in the White Mountains National Recreation Area from March 27 to 29, 2011. Last year's inaugural race involved 50 participants, 49 of whom completed the course. This year sixty-five people are scheduled to compete in the 100-mile-long event by bicycle, foot, or ski.Race organizers are starting the race on a Sunday morning to help mitigate concerns and issues with other users of the popular winter recreation area. Racers will follow a 100-mile loop that includes the Trail Creek, Cache Mountain Divide, Fossil Creek, and Wickersham Creek trails (see map (PDF/315 KB)). The race will use three public-use cabins as safety checkpoints along the race course.
Details on BLM's permitting of this event are available on the Eastern Interior Field Office's NEPA register.
