Integrated Invasive Plant Management for the Dalton Management Area

Since it was opened to the general public in 1995, the Dalton Highway has become a gateway for tourism and recreation as well as the industrial activities for which it was originally built. Unfortunately, the highway has also become an avenue for the northward expansion of invasive plants. Twenty-eight non-native invasive plant species have already been identified on lands along or near the highway. Serious economic and ecological harm is predicted if these species are left to expand their range.

To help address the problem, the BLM proposes to implement a five-year Integrated Invasive Plant Strategic Plan for the Dalton Management Area. The purpose of this strategic plan is to provide a strategy for the control, monitoring, prevention, and management of invasive plants in cooperation with state and federal agencies, private industry, landowners, and the public.

This website provides the latest information on the plan's development, which includes preparation of an Environmental Assessment (EA). On November 1, 2012, the BLM released the draft EA, which is available for public comment through December 10, 2012. Comments may be submitted by mail or email using the contact information in the right column of this page.
