Sen. Mark Begich speaking at press conferenceAgencies highlight youth employment opportunities

BLM State Director Juliia Dougan speaking at press conferenceOn June 2, 2010, BLM Acting State Director Julia Dougan (right) joined Senator Mark Begich (left) and the Alaska directors of other federal agencies to highlight summer youth employment opportunities in Alaska's federal parks, refuges, National Landscape Conservation System, and within other federal programs. The event was held at the BLM Campbell Creek Science Center.

This year the BLM Anchorage District Office will employ more than 60 youth and young adults to help with trail restoration, assist resource specialists in the field, and perform administrative tasks at field offices. Many of the youth jobs are funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

By exposing youth to careers in the public sector, the BLM and other federal agencies ensure a skilled work force to manage Alaska's public lands into the future.

BLM carpenter apprentice James Evangelestomp (above) from the Alaska Job Corps spoke during the press conference. Evangelestomp and fellow Job Corps carpenter Michael Prince II will help construct safety shelters along the Iditarod National Historic Trail this summer.
